10 - Attending the World Cup Final Phillip Bourne: England's third goal was a goal

I had also started work on some football magazines and became editor of 'Jimmy Hills Football Weekly ' and was working closely with The Football Association, and was selected to be one of their 'stewards' at Wembley for all England's games at Wembley in the World Cup.

On the day of the Final I was posted half way up the stand behind the corner flag looking down exactly on line with the goal in which the disputed goal was scored. I saw the shot hit the underside of the crossbar and spin in an arc down to bounce near the line. The spin took it way out of Roger's reach so he turned and claimed the goal. But as the ball spun in an arc down from the crossbar, I saw it quite clearly through the side netting and started jumping up and celebrating as we had seen the ball appearing to be in the net through the side netting. When I recovered from the celebrating, I couldn't understand why the ball hadn't been in the net and I hadn't realised it had spun out. Lucky the linesman had! So I am someone who KNOWS the ball was over the line. Its very frustrating to hear all the debates but at least the officials got it right. It was certainly a wonderful day.
