9 - Memorabilia Roy Briscoe: an unused ticket and a Final programme

I was brought up by my mother and was seven when the final took place in 1966. I do not particularly remember watching the game although I was told I did but I found out a few years later quite an incredible story.

My Uncle worked at the local clerk's department for the County Council and he and a few office friends were lucky enough to acquire tickets for the game. In fact, old Black & White footage of the players coming out by the tunnel clearly shows him and his friends. He had a spare ticket and asked my mother if he could take me to the match. She refused on the grounds that a group of blokes would be revelling if England were victorious and having a seven year old with them would certainly cramp their style. So the ticket was never used!

It remained unbroken and inside the programme he purchased at the game and amongst many others he had also purchased following England and his beloved Coventry City. That was until one spring in 2002 when he heard a knock on the door and was greeted by three Cub Scouts who were on their errand week. He had no jobs but instead gave them all his collection of old Footy Programmes – including the Football World Cup Programme with an unbroken Final Ticket inside the front page!

We could never trace who they were or where they had come from but someone, somewhere, has a 1966 Football World Cup programme with an unbroken ticket inside it.
