15 - Watching the Final in Germany Helen George: watching with a welcoming German family

In 1966 I was a 14 year old schoolgirl living with my parents in rural Lincolnshire.

My father spotted a piece in our newspaper from a German family inviting someone my age studying German at school to go and stay with them for 3 weeks to improve her German. My father applied for me and I was selected.

Looking back it was a bit crazy as we didn't know the family but they had been vetted. My knowledge of German was limited to school textbook stuff but the family was so welcoming.

My memory of the final is of us all huddled around the TV, me in the middle of the sofa trying not to cheer as it would have been impolite. It was tense, especially at the end, but a day that will remain with me forever.

The family came over to Lincolnshire the following year so they didn't bear a grudge! Our neighbours were amazed when we had a Mercedes car on the drive.

My father had an old 'banger'.
