15 - Watching the Final in Germany John Baker: watching in Frankfurt

I was working in Frankfurt am Main, West Germany in 1966 and watched the match at an Anglo German American club I had joined.

The room was full of Brits, Germans and several other nationalities. There was a very friendly atmosphere, with good natured banter between us Brits and the Germans. They may not have been happy with the result, celebrated with is true German style, i.e. with plenty of beer.

The next day I went the Roemerplatz in Frankfurt, where the German team were due to be greeted by the mayor at the town hall. The square was bursting with German fans, many shouting 'das war doch kein Tor' (that was not a goal referring of course to the last disputed goal). I admit I felt nervous, feeling I might be the only Englishman amongst all those Germans, but soon the German team arrived in open cars, with World Cup Willie, which I managed to photograph. I still have the photos.

The Monday I went to work, in a German bank, and was greeted with cheers and taunts (from colleagues with big smiles). Of course they weren't happy with the result and the conversation kept going back to the disputed goal.

I was treated very well and have very happy memories of that time.
