16 - Watching the Final with Germans Derek Hawkins: watching, with German students, on the Costa Blanca

I watched the final in a bar in Blanes, on the Costa Blanca, Spain, along with all the other pupils and teachers who were there on a trip from Bablake Grammar School, Coventry. This was quite an experience because the bar owner was quite content to serve any sort of refreshment, including beer and gin and tonics, and as many of us were in our early teens (I was 14) this was very exciting along with the game.

We were joined by some German students, so the atmosphere was pretty intense. At the end of the match, and as a celebration, a few of us thought it would be a great idea to swim out to a small rocky island in the bay and display a small Union Flag. Unfortunately this almost caused a diplomatic incident, the Spanish authorities took a very dim view of this and we had to make very sincere apologies to the then extremely authoritarian, right wing and heavily armed police commissioner.

Needless to say this was followed up by some further grief from our teachers. Oh well, we thought it was good at the time
