10 - Attending the World Cup Final Stephen Lee: a possible replay causes concern before England's fourth goal

After watching all the early games in the North West my Dad and I travelled to London to watch the Final.

Whilst my Mum and Sister did not have tickets they travelled with us in order to soak up the atmosphere on Wembley Way. Having said our farewells, my Dad and I entered the stadium as early as 1.30 pm. My first surprise of the day was when the team entered the arena wearing red shirts as I had expected them to be in their traditional white kit. My second surprise was to notice that Geoff Hurst had retained his place at the expense of Jimmy Greaves.

All was going well until Haller scored. I was stunned as all I was expecting was to see England win the World Cup and the Germans were not following the script! I need not have worried as first Hurst and then Peters put us back on the road to glory and the crowd sang "Eee Aye Addio we've won the cup!" The Germans again failed to follow the script and equalised in the last minute. As extra time loomed, I asked my Dad if we would be staying in London if the Final were to go to a replay. His response was to remind me that I was 16, had just left school and would be looking for a job next week!

There was no need to worry and I will never forget that golden moment when the net bulged for the fourth goal and the celebrations began.

As we were leaving the stadium we got the biggest surprise of the day and we met up with my Mum and Sister inside the ground. Unbeknown to us they had purchased tickets from a tout at 2.55pm for the princely sum of ten shillings each (50 pence). What a day and what a journey home to Accrington with our flags waving from the car and fellow travellers pipping their car horns throughout the night's journey. Stephen Lee
