I was 19 and still living at home with my parents in Bushey, handy for Stanmore to Wembley Park, then Bakerloo Line.
My dear father spent £14-15/- on two Grade 3 standing tickets for all ten London based matches. I went to nine of the ten games, missing Mexico v Uruguay. My dad joined me for a few games including the final. Other friends used his ticket and we bought two tickets from the touts – I think at cost price – for the Argentina quarter final. The result was no surprise to me as I had already dreamt that England won 1-0!
I still have the nine tickets, the information leaflet giving ticket prices, an Official Souvenir Programme (cost 2/6) with all the players for every game written in and the Final programme.
Had extra time not produced a result, I believe the replay was scheduled for the following Tuesday. I was booked on a flight to Blantyre, Malawi for that day where I would spend a year as a volunteer, leading to a thirty year career as a Secondary School teacher of English. Thank goodness Mr Hurst’s second goal was awarded, otherwise I would have been faced with quite possibly a life-changing decision!
