17 - Working on the day of the Final A Collection of memories of working on the day of the Final

I was nine. Saw the first half on black & white television. My brother had to do his paper round, so I went to help. We passed a bus waiting at a bus stop (no passengers!); the driver was listening to the radio: we asked the score and he told us the result. Happy walk home. Gordon Gotch

During the week of the World Cup final in 1966 I was away from my base at Farnborough and working on some aeroplanes at RAF Brugen, Germany. One evening, after dinner, the mess bar was empty with the exception of the bar man, and myself. I enquired where all the other incumbents were and was told they were watching the match.

I enquired, more in politeness - 'which match', to be told it was Germany against England. I asked if he also wanted to watch it to be told he could not whilst I was there. A quick deal was struck, which involved a large brandy and both of us joined the others in the TV lounge. The match was interesting, quite exciting towards the end. That was the first, and last, football match I have watched. Alan Thomas

Family of 5 sitting around a small black & white tv in a typical small lounge. Knock on the door in middle of game. Answered door to an insurance man collecting his monthly money. "Well I know everyone will be in" he said!

Dad did a somersault nearly hitting his head on the hearth, never seen him do it before or since. My Brother went to the semi final, I went to England v Mexico with Bobby Charlton's goal hitting the net right in front of me. Amazing memories! Colin Russell

Then age 23, I was a trainee manager at The Dorchester Hotel in London doing my stint as trainee chef there. I planned to hitchhike from London to my home in Chorley, Lancashire, so took the tube to the southernmost end of the M1, where I quickly got a lift from a businessman in a big Ford Zodiac. We hardly spoke a word all the way but just listened to the “wireless” and when we stopped at the services for a cuppa the whole area was virtually silent in order to listen to the match. We were nearing Chorley when the final goal was scored, and we both cheered out loud in this posh Ford Zodiac. I remember it clearly: what a moment! Eric Marsh

I was a Midshipman, in HMS Mohawk; in the Indian Ocean, on the Beira Oil Blockade. As one of those not particularly interested in football, I was on watch; whilst most of the ship's company listened to the match commentary on the ship's PA system. The order to "Splice the Mainbrace" was given following the result. Dixie Hughes
