17 - Working on the day of the Final Angie Dewey: working on the day of the Final helping my brother do his paper round - quickly

I have such vivid memories of that wonderful day.

I was 10 and my brother was 15. Dad, mum and the neighbours crowded around our second hand Bush TV. It often faltered with a white line coming across it and dad had to keep hitting it on the top.

During the match, my brother had to do his paper round and me as a reluctant ten year old was 'made' to help him as he was not happy that he had to still deliver papers whilst everyone was glued to TV and radio. I remember dashing in between the houses being made to run to shove papers through doors as quick as we can, the sound of the noise from the houses was everywhere, then when England scored grown men and women came running out to the street hugging everyone.

To me my memory of this was that we celebrated by having a very special tea of trifle and angel cake which was usually only for Sundays and birthdays and being allowed a 'sip' of one of my mums homemade snowballs and being allowed to eat the cherry - magical!
