I was 17, on a converted troop ship returning from the U.S.A. with the American Field Service exchange programme, along with other teenagers from different European countries including Ireland, the U.K., the Netherlands, Italy, Norway, Germany and France.
The match was broadcast over the tannoy and, it seemed, the decision who to support was based on who was on which side during World War Two.
