14 - Following the Final on Holiday Mary Rostron: watching in Paris and not knowing who I wanted to win

I was 15 years old and had been invited on the holiday of a life time with my pen friend who lived in Paris. I spent a week in her home and 3 weeks in the South of France. The last days before I was coming home my friend's father wanted complete silence while the match was on. So we went to the bedroom and I wrote to my family and decorated the envelope with a Union Jack and my friend dropped the bombshell - if England won I had to use my bad French to ask for the stamp for my letter.

If Germany won she would buy it for me - I was so shy this was a nightmare for me. I practiced my French all through the match and her father invited us in to watch extra time. I have NEVER ever been so divided in my desire for a result wishing with all my heart we would win but dreaded it at the same time!!

After the euphoria of the win my friend dragged me to the shop to buy the stamp, we stood outside the shop for ages while I plucked up the courage to go and buy it, which I did, then I could really celebrate, but it is something I have never forgotten - elation and fear both at the same time!
