16 - Watching the Final with Germans Phil Tobin: watching extra time in Rosas, Spain

We were on our first foreign holiday to Rosas in Spain and there was 6 of us although it may have been 8. We were all about 16 to 17 and all a bit wild.

On the night before the final we all went out to a club and after a few drinks one of the party decided to try to drive the bus that had taken us there. He drove it about 5 yards straight into a tree and was promptly arrested. As he was travelling with us we were also arrested, escorted back to our hotel and had our passports confiscated.

We were told to report to the police station at kick off time the next day.

We were then interrogated for about an hour before they returned our passports and let go with a very stern warning. What they hadn't realised is that extra time was being played as we only found out when we found the nearest bar with a television so we all got drinks and started to watch the game.

When England scored we all went mad not realising that the bar was full of Germans. We were still oblivious to this until England scored their fourth goal and we thought then that trouble was brewing but I have to say that they were brilliant about it all and we ended up having a beer with them.
