As a young BBC Engineer I was allocated to service Austrian Radio covering the matches at Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
The night that North Korea beat Italy 1-0 at Ayresome Park all the commentary boxes erupted. My colleague with the Korean commentator was engulfed in the celebrations.
In that pre-digital age all broadcast lines were operated by a team of GPO engineers who posted daily bulletins on the sound quality delivered to each country. On one occasion they jokingly reported that the previous night's links to Korea had been completed on several miles of "wet string".
