11 - The England Players A Collection of memories of the players

I have a tape recording which I've since transferred to a CD, of my late husband at the Hendon Hall Hotel where the players at that time always stayed, which was only about 5 minutes away from his home. He told me after the match he and two friends rushed over there, him with his portable tape recorder and as a hotel is a public place they could just stand inside and wait until the players returned and stood greeting them. As he fancied himself as a budding BBC interviewer he spoke to them and to his amusement they stopped and spoke into the microphone! His friend who wasn't a football fan thought Alan Ball (who was quite a small guy) was the mascot! Cynthia Lyons

My father is the late Alan Ball MBE, he was the youngest player in the World Cup final and was man of the match. I was not alive in 66 but my father told me lots of stories. I am very proud of him and all he achieved in his life. He died in 2007 but as a family we are constantly trying to keep his memory and legacy alive. Both my son's Jimmy and Mack play football but my youngest son Mack is currently under 10 goalkeeper at AFC Bournemouth and his grandad is his hero. Best in the world at 21...Wow!!! Keely Allan

I was in the right place at the right time as Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters and John Sissons all lived in the same street as myself at that time. All of course with West Ham United. On one occasion I was playing football in the road with my friends and they came out and joined in. It was quite something, particularly as the World Cup was being held in England that year. Great memories of a great time in English football history!! Peter Thomson

Having played as an inside forward for an FA X1 v London University in 1958, I had kept a report from The Times which showed a photo of R. Hunt (the other inside forward !) . He was in the Army and playing for Devizes Town and I was in the RAF playing with Corinthian-Casuals. We lost the game 0-1 and neither of us got a mention! When Roger Hunt started scoring goals for Liverpool I realised it might have been him in our FA game and wrote to him to find out. He confirmed it was, we met up and have been good friends since. Phillip Bourne

Memories of Bobby Moore being total class, Nobby Stiles skipping, and the famous Kenneth Wolstenholme quote. I think 5 of the England team could have got on a best in the World Eleven. The whole team and squad were heroes and on this anniversary year should all be knighted. It was a memorable weekend, I was just 15 and left school on the Friday, England won the cup on the Saturday, and I started work on the Monday. I watched it on a black and white telly with my mam, my dad was watching it at the pub. Great days, and lovely memories. Mark Hedley

I was in Hastings on holiday with my family on World Cup final day. Geoff Hurst stole the show with his hat-trick but Sir Bobby Charlton was magnificent throughout the competition. A great player and captain that led by example and inspired his players to reach new heights. He is also a shining example of what legends should be made of. Matt Mattheou
