12 - Following the Final at home A Collection of Memories of watching the Final at home

As a football mad 11 year old I thought we were invincible. I was living in Birkenhead, Liverpool had won their first FA Cup in 1965 so was convinced we wouldn't lose with 'Sir' Roger Hunt playing instead of Jimmy Greaves. With a few seconds to go I had my Liverpool kit on ready to celebrate, then an equaliser, but no worries we would still win. A roomful of people from the village crowded round Dad's colour television cheering us on to a famous win! After the match it was off to the Puddyvale field to do it all again with my friends, happy days! Alan Sutton

I was 7 years old and had been going every week to see my team Oxford United play since my uncle first took me aged 5. I recall being so excited at the prospect of winning the World Cup but also being apprehensive when Jimmy Greaves could not play in the final. I recall sitting in my living room and watching the match on old our old tv that used to flicker (horizon hold was broken) and actually missing the third Geoff Hurst goal, by the time we adjusted the screen it was really all over!

But what a great sense of pride as a 7 year old, that stayed with me all these years later even through Gazza's tears in 1990. I recall that 'Goal' magazine had a picture in the August edition on its centre pages of Bobby Moore holding the World Cup aloft next to the Queen which stayed on my bedroom wall for the next 9 years until I was sixteen. Mike Boyne

30th July 1966: early dinner (egg, chips and peas), turn the TV on and watch the World Cup Final. Mum watches too, even though she's not really interested in football. Great music, different anthems for each nation, some obvious, some definitely not obvious. Then the match starts, I sit in Dad's chair with my crisps, toffees and fruit juices, cheer on the goals, even the German ones(!) as this is a well matched game.

Half time, visit toilets, listen to brass bands, stirring English music, and get into seat ready for the second half. The famous goal, was it a goal? I say yes, Mum not sure, but then it's England 4 W. Germany 2. I run around cheering (I was 9 at the time) little did I know we wouldn't win any major trophies to date, so these memories are very precious to me. John Priestly
