19 - Births, Marriages and Deaths David Hurst: born on the day

I don't remember anything about the day because I was only 12 hours old when my namesake scored the 3rd goal of his hat trick!

I was in St Mary's hospital in Leeds, having been born at 4.35am. My mum was annoyed that the game was going on as there were few staff around to look after and feed me, as they were gathered round a transistor radio listening to it. Many people have asked why I'm called David; I wasn't christened Geoff as my mum wanted nothing to do with that game, since my dad had spent the day at a friends' house watching it.

My mum and dad didn't have a television, nor did anyone in the family, so he took the bus to his pal's house at the other side of Leeds, then spent the evening celebrating with friends. Twenty years later I was featured in the Yorkshire Evening Post photographed with Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, who had come to my dad's car dealership, Local Garages Leeds Ltd, to give us an award for selling the most car warranty plans. As an avid football fan, following Leeds Utd around the country and Europe at the time, this was a real highlight of my life. All because I was born on THAT day!

By that time, to add more coincidence to the whole episode, we were neighbours, on West End Lane in Horsforth, with Norman Hunter, another World Cup winner and of course a key member of the famous Leeds United team.

Our own mobile cocktail bar business, now 16 years old, has seen us serving 3 of those World Cup winners at private and charity functions, though I've never met Sir Geoff or Martin since that day.

Naturally I'll be celebrating my 50th birthday on 30th July this year - the invites have just gone out, entitled "Some people are on the pitch...."!
