10 - Attending the World Cup Final Ray Myserscough: Tickets via the knocked out Bulgarians

I remember attending the Final in July 1966 as a 14 year old together with my three friends and accompanied by two adults.

We obtained the tickets via one of the fathers who worked as a maintenance electrician at the Piccadilly Hotel in Manchester. The tale he told was that one of the losing teams in the local group - Bulgaria I think, were leaving the hotel having been knocked out and left him with 7 tickets for the final at a face value of 10 shillings each.

We travelled down from Manchester to Wembley by train, my first visit to the capital and had a spare ticket which was sold by one of the adults outside for £2 10 shillings!

The main memory I have is not of the football but of the German fans who were mixed up with everyone else and who had klaxon horns which made the air seem wavy whilst we had the old wooden rattles.

A great day and a very unusual set of circumstances that must be unique. Both adults have now died but I keep in touch with one of my young friends who still has the programme and ticket. We are both now in our sixties. What a day and what a memory!
