10 - Attending the World Cup Final Frank Horrocks: watching from a German section

I was there! I was stationed at RAF Sealand and applied for a series of tickets 9 months in advance for the games at Goodison and Old Trafford.

What a draw, Brazil, Hungary, Bulgaria and Portugal! The block included the quarter final : Portugal and South Korea, you can imagine the huge names from that era, awe inspiring and the football was something to be believed.

However THE FINAL, turns out all the tickets for the final had not been sold and having bought a block I was offered a ticket for the final. What would you say ?

My seat was in the stand opposite the Royal Box, four rows from the front in the middle of a huge group of Germans, virtually in line with the goal line.

Memories: on top of the normal (what is normal at a World Cup final?)

The lump in my throat when Germany scored their second goal, especially sitting in the middle of those Germans.

Watching large numbers of fans leave before the whistle at the end of normal time.

The disputed goal : watching Hunt turn away with his arms raised, followed by the tension when the linesman was consulted.

The relief of the final goal.

Who could forget Nobby Stiles dancing round with the World Cup with no teeth in!

Happy memories and I was there.

Frank Horrocks
