18 - Other interests on Final day A Collection of other interests on the day of the Final

I was aged 18 at the time and a fervent player and supporter. Like the rest of the country I had been following the previous rounds. Unfortunately, it was the era of the mods and rockers and along with a group of others we had arranged to drive our scooters to Brighton where we stayed for a few days. On the day of the final I was riding, along with a convoy of others back to Yeovil in Somerset and so I missed the live final. I believe from memory that it was repeated the following day and so I watched it then. Anyway, we had a good time in Brighton. Roger Matthews

My name was Jenny Brown and I was 16 years old, myself and my friends were in Princess Square Wolverhampton on our way to do some girlie shopping! As we passed by a television shop in Princess Square people were gathered around the shop front watching the match! My friends and I were more interested in doing some shopping, it's only now as I am older and wiser, I realized how significant that occasion was. Jenny Robinson

During the World Cup in 1966 I along with my parents and younger brother, Iain, watched every game possible and although being Scottish we were extremely excited that England had reached the final. We had made plans to watch the match, however that did not happen as at approximately 1 p.m. on the day before the event my father had a serious car accident and was taken to Ipswich Hospital. On the Saturday my mother, brother and myself went to visit father and he was quite badly hurt. Thankfully in time he made a full recovery but during the years, which followed, and up until his death in 2005 we never let him forget that he was the reason we missed the final! Aileen Tacon

I was born in 1958, Epping, Essex & grew up & lived in Harlow, Essex with father born in Walthamstow London married to Mother born in Hamburg, Germany where they met in 1946. This was a strange thing growing up with WW2 fresh in many people's minds! When it came to the 1966 World Cup final it was a slight pull as to who I wanted to win as either way my family would have a small celebration & cause neighbours to jeer at us ! Tony Mottram
