19 - Births, Marriages and Deaths Mrs Geoffrey Cochran: a wedding at 3.30 meant some absentees

My husband & I were married on this day.

Being a family of football fans we ask my father what date in July would be best, it was decided that England may make the quarters & semi finals, but not the final so the 30/7/66 at 3.30pm was the chosen date.

There were a few men missing at the church, lucky for me he turned up, though none of his mates made the service, during the ceremony there was a little cheer when we scored, and when we went into the vestry to sign the register the vicar whom we knew was sent out to find the score, by the time the service & photos had finished England were heading for extra time , the reception was put on hold to allow anyone who wanted, to head to my Uncle's house and watch the end of the final.

When they returned they marched in holding the Union Jack and chanting "da da da da da England." It was fantastic and we had a wonderful reception. I was interviewed for the radio 2 programme on my 25th wedding anniversary, 2 sons, 2 daughter-in-laws & 5 granddaughters later we are all off to Florida to celebrate our golden wedding hoping that England will have already won the European Cup this time.
