18 - Other interests on Final day A Collection of other interests on the day of the Final

I remember exactly what my husband and I were doing when England won the World Cup in 1966. We were entertaining my Swedish friend and her boy friend to lunch and when they arrived they said why had we not got the tv on, so we had lunch and put the tv on. After feeding our first little boy Sean, we put him down in front of the television to play before we put him in his playpen and he got up and walked for the very first time, so whilst England won the World Cup we were gazing at our first born taking his first steps! Also I was getting the washing in as it had started to rain and drying nappies were important then! Christine Kerr & Mike Kerr

I was born on the 13/11/1959 so I was just over 6 and a half years of age during the tournament. I come from Kenilworth in Warwickshire originally, and I remember the World Cup very well, considering I was so young. My Father was a prisoner of war, captured in Dunkirk, then force marched to a prisoner of war camp in Poland, he could speak fluent German. Funny now, I seem to remember my dad was decorating the main sitting room, as I sat on a small stool, watching the game in black and white on the T.V. I got very excited when England scored their goals, I asked my father if he wanted to watch it, he just said you carry on and enjoy it son. It was just one of those father and son moments that really stuck in my mind, especially as England won the game. I appreciate the opportunity of being allowed to tell you of my memories of this magical moment in my upbringing. Simon Aubrey

I had booked my first driving lesson on the Saturday of the World Cup final at 2.30. The driving school was based in Southsea and I rode my scooter there not really noticing how quiet it was. As it turned out, we did not see another vehicle for the entire 30 minutes of the lesson which was quite handy actually as after less than one minute into the lesson I was asked "which side of the road do we drive in England?" I had strayed over the white line somewhat. Eventually I made it home to find I had missed the first 25 minutes of the final. Keith Leadbitter
