18 - Other interests on Final day Keith Matthews: inadvertently on the train to Wembley

I don't follow football; having been more keen on other sports; so on that day I left Bushey near Watford and travelled by train to South London to do some shopping.

All seemed quite normal early in the day, but when I returned later on the stations were crowded with people; so I guessed something important was going on! Anyway, cutting a long story short, the train I travelled on was so crammed with passengers that I couldn't get out, and eventually ended up at Wembley station, and everyone got out; leaving me standing there alone in the carriage!

I then had to travel back to London to get the Bakerloo train to Bushey. My wife and friends think I must have been one of the few people on earth who didn't know that England were playing in the final of the Football World Cup !

However; I'm now able to tell my football mad friends that "I was at Wembley for the 1966 World Cup."
