14 - Following the Final on Holiday A Collection of holiday memories

16 years old and with two friends were Youth Hostelling in the Lake District on the day of the final. We thought a group of people were listening to the game on the radio and asked if we could listen. It turned out they were walkie talkies as they were a rescue team looking for a missing person. However we saw most of the game through someone's front window with about 20 others as the family had kindly opened their curtains. Steve

I was on holiday in the Norfolk Broads during the world Cup. My wife was astonished to find we had a television on board and pointed out that my cousin and his wife who were holidaying with us were not the slightest interested in football. For two weeks we all watched the matches and interest grew as England progressed. On the day of the final we raced back to Portsmouth to watch the match at home and were rewarded with a great win. My personal hero was Alan Ball who ran himself into the ground. John W Drain

Our family was on the way home from holiday in the West Country and listened to the match on the radio whilst standing in the middle of Stonehenge. In those days you could walk right up to, around and over the stones. There were many groups of people there huddled around portable radios. I was 17 years old at the time. Ann Gammack
