17 - Working on the day of the Final Mary Puddicombe: our paper boy on the day of the Final

My particular memory (in fact our family memory) is whilst we were watching the build up to the match on television

About 10 minutes before it was due to start, my mother started laughing hysterically and looking out of the window. What had caused her mirth was the sight of our “paper boy” actually running up and down ours and the neighbour’s driveways, in an effort to get the round done before the match started (or at least not to miss too much of it).

Evidently this particular paper deliverer was notorious for being late with the delivery of the “evening” paper – which usually arrived about 6pm but should have been with us by about 4.

As, in my mum’s eyes, he always looked so slow and cumbersome, dawdling up each driveway, she found it absolutely hilarious. I joined in the laughter, but really I felt quite sorry for the boy who was probably only a bit older than I was and I always wondered how much of the match he did get to see.
