17 - Working on the day of the Final Larry Corkrey: working at the CEGB on the day of the Final

On the afternoon of the game I was the generation despatch engineer on duty at CEGB Power System Control Centre in St Albans.

The role of the generation despatch engineer was to direct the operation of the power plants for the North Home counties and East Anglia, not only to estimate the predicted increase in demand at half time and full time but also to ensure that the power plants on line responded to match exact that increase in demand.

To enable me to do this I had to monitor the progress of the game on a TV in the despatch to enable me to respond as required. I cannot remember the precise instantaneous increase in the demand at the end of the game due to electric kettles being switched on and toilets being flushed but think it was at 1000 mws across the whole country within 30 seconds of the game finishing.
