17 - Working on the day of the Final Jim Miller: a week's career training begins on the day of the Final - in Scotland

On World Cup final day in 1966, myself age 20 and a friend Peter Boulter aged 22 (Regular West Ham goers! we had met the West Ham players in the England side several times back then). We travelled from London to "Inverclyde" in Largs, Scotland (Scottish National Sports Centre, where the Scottish International Teams trained at that time). We were going there for a weeks sports training to be coaches, as youth club leaders.

We travelled up in an Austin Mini and arrived at the centre about half way through the second half of the final, listening to the match on the car radio on the way. We parked up in the car park, and just sat in the car and listened to the rest of the game. As full time ended a girl came out of the centre and said that some others were watching the game on a TV. We jumped out of the car and ran into the centre to watch the extra time on TV. At the end of the game we went back outside to the car and the doors were wide open and the radio still blaring away just as we left it. We did not care, We Had Won The World Cup!! It was a great start to our week!
