17 - Working on the day of the Final Dennis Kilby: working in a petrol garage on the day of the Final

I was unfortunately working that afternoon. I drew the short straw and had to cover the afternoon shift on the garage forecourt at the Purley Way Service Station in Croydon, Surrey.

I came prepared with my radio so I could hear the game, but Murphy's Law being what it is, I managed to drop the thing leaving it useless. So for the whole period of the match I was strolling up and down the forecourt singing loudly as there was nobody to hear me. The road, which was usually very busy, was deserted and I never saw a soul until the match finished.

My frustration was softened when I heard the result and especially as it as the West Ham players, which was my team, that made the difference. I didn't get time to dwell on it to much as it seemed the world and his wife wanted petrol that evening.
