14 - Following the Final on Holiday Guy R. Clements: a deliberately timed hike at Scout Camp in Barmouth

I was on the annual scout camp for my scout group (1st Southwell Scouts - part of the then Southwell Minster Grammar School) near to Barmouth.

On the afternoon of the final, no doubt to discourage us from retreating to tents and listening to the final on radios, we were sent on a hike. Coming down into Barmouth we passed a house where a man was in the front garden and when asked if he knew the result he gave the score in a very foreign accent and then a few paces on reality dawned as in the front of the house was a German registered Mercedes so this luckless German not only had to tell of his nation's defeat but had to contend with teenagers exultant at his nation's defeat!

That's my memory of World Cup 1966, the next final, 1970 was the eve of my first year exams at Uni so I missed that as well!
