14 - Following the Final on Holiday Janet McQuillan: travelling home from our holiday in South Wales

I was ten years old and in a van, with my family (mum, dad and two younger brothers), driving back to Liverpool from our camping holiday in South Wales. We were on the M6.

My dad had the radio on listening to the match. He was hoping to get home before the game finished. Mum was telling him off for driving too fast but us kids were keen to see the game too. (My dad was a Liverpool season ticket holder and took me and my brother to home games.)

Germany equalised and we knew the game was going to extra time. Dad realised we could get home before the end of the game. Our turning down the East Lancs Road was coming up (the M62 didn't exist) but there was a car in front of us driving slowly in the inside lane, dad decided to overtake him but he was distracted listening to the game and missed our turning. Dad was cross and mum was telling him he'd have to go on to the next exit which was a long way off.

Dad saw a break in the island dividing the two carriage ways. (They didn't have bollards or posts in them in the early days.) We did a U turn on the motorway. There was hardly any traffic then. Mum wasn't impressed, she wasn't interested in football either.

When we got home the first thing we did was to switch on the TV, we were just in time to see Bobby Moore raise the cup over his head.
