14 - Following the Final on Holiday Liz Woodfield: travelling to my aunt and uncle's in Norfolk

I was 14 in 1966. My friend Sue and I loved watching football especially West Ham because we were both madly in love with Bobby Moore. My Dad was a very keen football fan as well, and he went to see a couple of the qualifying games at Villa Park.

On the day of the final we were travelling by car from our home in Oxfordshire to Norfolk to stay with my Auntie and Uncle. The plan must have been to get there well before the match started, but unfortunately we got stuck in a traffic jam, and had to listen to the match on the car radio. My poor Dad was getting more and more worked up as we sat in the traffic as the match progressed, but fortunately as the game went into extra time we arrived at the house in time to watch the end of the match, and were able to join in the celebrations. Even my Mum, who normally hated football got quite excited that day!
