14 - Following the Final on Holiday Iain Lambert: listening on a ferry across the River Schelde

I was 11 and with my family touring around Northern France, Belgium, Holland & Germany in our mini.

We had crossed the channel by plane with the car from Lydd to Le Touquet (it was a shilling more expensive than the ferry). On the day of the final we had left Bruges where we had stayed the night and visited Blankenburg en route to Middleburg. To do this we had to cross the river Schelde on the car ferry. The ferry time was part way through the match that we had been listening to on our large transistor radio in the car. We took our radio up on to the deck to continue listening and soon gathered a crowd of German & Dutch listeners.

The ferry docked on about 90 minutes so we had to rush down to the car and get off and find a place to stop to listen to the remainder of extra time. Exciting day, even my dad who didn’t like football got involved with the match.
