14 - Following the Final on Holiday Tony Clark: the celebratory reaction in Malta

In July 1966 I had just turned 16, and my parents and I were on holiday in Malta, staying in Msida with a family whose home overlooked the town square.

I had no interest in football, but was aware that England were playing in the final as the grandfather of the house was watching it on a small black and white TV - I was out on the balcony enjoying the warm calm summer evening.

Suddenly the town seemed to erupt, with some people shouting from their balconies, and others running around the square, shouting, and waving Union Jacks – ‘grandad’ told us that this was because England had just won.

Within minutes the square was filling up, passing drivers were flashing their lights and honking their horns, and fireworks were going off all around – it seemed like the whole island had come alive, and the celebrations went on well into the night!

I still have no interest in the game, but at least I can say I have one footballing memory that I'll never forget!

Tony Clark
