14 - Following the Final on Holiday Caroline Bateson: watching on holiday in Basel

I remember as a six year old watching the last half hour of the 1966 final on TVs in a shop window in Basel, Switzerland.

I was with my parents driving in their Triumph Herald back across Switzerland from our holiday in Italy. We had no radio in the car but knew the Germans had scored first as Germans in car in front of us in traffic were jumping up and down as first goal went in.

The frustration of not knowing what was happening made my parents stop in centre of Basel and find a TV shop with crowds outside. We were only British people there and I have a clear memory of everyone cheering when England won and congratulating us; clearly the Swiss were delighted Germany lost!

I remember the cheering so clearly and the black and white TV pictures through the window and crowded pavement.
