15 - Watching the Final in Germany Lorraine Hawkins: watching on an exchange trip to Germany

At 16 years old and female I found myself staying in Germany on a sort of exchange trip during the final.

As the day approached I was teased and taunted by everyone particularly the local postman who said "We have Beckenbauer! We have Overath! Seeler! Heldt! and what do you have? With a sneer he said "Bobby Charlton......and he is past it!" I was the poor unfortunate butt of all their laughter.

So the whole family settled down to watch the match. And then...

Suddenly, they stopped laughing!

Many lectures on the rules of the game followed on how unfair and illegal it had been, especially from that postman. My German was very poor but I could not erase my big smirk nor stifle my pride.

Cannot and would never want to forget that day.
