John Priestly: the Radio Luxembourg chart of July 7th

Aah, what of summer '66 was - my sister was into The Beatles and George best, I was collecting bubble gum and Brooke Bond tea trading cards.

Then the World Cup sparked off the summer for me, I watched the Uruguay game and thought Oh no, we need to be better than this.

I listened to Radio Luxembourg on my transistor, the July 7th chart was typical of the era.

Dusty Springfield was "Goin' Back" at Number 30

New to the charts were The Troggs with "Wild Thing" at Number 28

Los Bravos "Black is Black" at Number 25

And strangely, The Rolilng Stones with "Paint it Black" at Number 23

Beach Boys classic "Sloop John B" at Number 19

Simon and Garfunkel with "I Am A Rock" at Number 17

Travesty of Justice - the great James Brown gets his highest chart position (until the 80s) with "Its a Man's Man's Man's World" at Number 13

Cilla Black with "Don't Answer Me" at Number 8

Ol' Blues Eyes with "Strangers In The Night" at Number 5 - one of my Mum's favourites

Brilliant - The Kinks at Number 1 with "Sunny Afternoon"

Aah - what happy memories

John Priestly
