14 - Following the Final on Holiday Ian Burgoyne: celebrating with German sailors in Weymouth

A mate and myself had booked time off from work to have a camping holiday in Dorset. The great day found us in Weymouth and, starting around midday, try as we might, we couldn't gain entry to any of Weymouth's many hotels that were televising the match. Not surprising really as we were 19 years old, dressed in t-shirts, jeans, and moccasin shoes!

We were getting despondent until we saw a couple of girls listening to their radio on the beach. We casually ambled over and with only about 10 minutes to go until kick off, managed to convince them to retune from their music and listen to the game. We stayed with them until the end, thanked them very much and disappeared!

That evening, we went to a pub down by the harbour to celebrate and were surprised (delighted) to see about 20 or so German sailors, whose naval ship was moored off shore stood at the bar. It turned out to be a great evening, plenty of drinking, singing and joking took place. There was absolutely no violence, not a single punch thrown, just good clean fun We even managed to chat up a couple of girls, who wouldn't let us take them home, but were quite happy to take us "home".

A great night was had by all.

Ian Burgoyne
