16 - Watching the Final with Germans A Collection of memories of watching with Germans

I remember this match very well, I listened to it in a German bar in a town called Goch with a load of other RAF men and German civilians. After the final whistle sadly a rumpus started after a Scotsman made a remark that having lost 2 wars against England how did they expect to win a football match. The bar was out of bounds for a few days afterwards. Andy

I watched the match on TV in a flat in Stanberg south of Munich with a room full of Germans. Ken Manning

We were in London staying in a hotel for the weekend. It was my 11th birthday Sat 30th July . My Dad and I watched the Final in the hotel lounge with four Germans. At the final whistle they were gracious in defeat and came up and shook our hands. Neil Simpson

In July 1966, I was a 14 year-old Boy Scout. Our annual summer camp was at Gilwell in Chingford, on the edge of Epping Forest. Gilwell accommodated Scouts from all over the world, so on July 30th 1966, my troop found itself in a large hall with a group of Scouts from West Germany. A large hall with a small black and white TV set showing the match. The atmosphere was electric, with the way the game developed, so was almost as good as being at Wembley. There was a lot of banter during the game, but in the end we all shook hands and left as friends. Chris Smale
