16 - Watching the Final with Germans Annie Cooper: watching with Germans, in Tunisia

I was 12 and we were on a family holiday in Tunisia. We had been to Kairouan for the day in a taxi and stopped at a cafe in the middle of nowhere, on the way back to Sousse.

The World Cup final was on a TV there. There was also a coach load of Germans there, and 6 of us Brits! In 1966, the Germans were very popular in Tunisia - they had money. We could only take £50 each abroad.

Geoff Hurst scored and they turned the tv off in disgust. We were very quiet. A few Germans grudgingly congratulated us. But after about 10 minutes, they turned the tv back on. The Tunisians wanted to see the Queen! There was great respect for her.

So that was how I saw England win the World Cup!
