6 - England through the Tournament Eddie O'Keefe: "Working" and seeing the England games at the same time

During June and July of 1966 Eddie O'Keeffe and Michael O'Sullivan went to London to work a summer job for a few weeks. My Uncle was living in Wembley so that is why we were in that part of London. We went to the Labour Exchange at the bottom of Olympic Way and the lady assistant offered us a choice of jobs. The Local Council were looking for trainee gardeners or she said we could work at Wembley Stadium for the World Cup.

We ran the short distance from the exchange to the Stadium and started the next day. After a week or so of sweeping and cleaning after the dog racing and a Billy Graham meeting in the Stadium we saw a notice in the canteen that volunteers were needed to man the scoreboard over the players tunnel. We immediately volunteered and got the gig for ALL the games including the final.

Brilliant memories, even to this day.

Eddie O'Keeffe
